HIV infection

The Cologne Model focuses on self-regulation of the organism. Understanding and knowledge is collected and accumulated through scientific literature, careful observation and documentation. The therapy concepts in the Cologne Model are pragmatic and never oppose academic (Western) medicine and tradition. When exposed and under certain circumstances, a human being can get infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

HIV belongs to the family of the Retroviruses. Retroviruses have a unique mechanism to build itself into the chromosomes of the host cell (through an enzyme called reverse RNA-transcriptase). Once built in, the virus can no longer be affected by the mechanisms of the immune system and thus, slowly destroy it. The results are that the HIV-infected individual can do from a huge variety of (opportunistic) infections and malignancies.

The incubation time of HIV infection is in industrialized countries about 11.5 years. This means, that (without proper treatment and care) about 50% of all people living with HIV infection will receive the diagnosis AIDS in about 11.5 years. In the Cologne Model, current scientific knowledge, clinical experience and observations are incorporated within the therapeutic concept. Also, the current understanding of the phenomenon, that many people do not have symptoms of immune deficiency after many years of infection, is taken into consideration. What do these individuals have in common that they become so-called long-term non- progressors? What is it in their immune system that they live well and for a long time? Why do some get symptoms after one year of infection and others not until twenty years later, if at all?

In the Cologne Model, the immune function is carefully evaluated by current scientific laboratory methods. From here, therapeutic interventions and supportive measures are introduced. One of the main purposes is to strengthen the organism in its biologic defense mechanisms against HIV and to inhibit disease progression. The only way theCologne Model differs from regular Western (academic) medicine is in one of its paradigms, that treatment should be based on a holistic approach to health and disease. Current academic medicine identifies pharmaceutical components to kill the virus. Its paradigm is expressed in its therapeutic interventions: anti-retrovirals,anti-biotics, anti-hypertensives, anti-depressants, etc. A holistic approach includes not only anti-retroviral medications but also all those sound therapeutic interventions, which support the immune system and the organism as a whole. The Cologne Model wants to act anti- (against) and pro (in favor, in support): anti when that is appropriate and pro whenever it enhances the persons self- regulation and self-healing capacities.
